6 Factors That Impact the Cost of Your Window Installation

Factors that affect the cost of new windows

Before beginning your window installation, you’re likely hoping for a “ballpark” price estimate to set aside for your brand-new windows.

Unfortunately, the cost of your windows relies on several factors unique to each home, from window size to frame material—so it’s not as simple as you might think to lock down a final amount for your window replacement.

Common Factors that Impact Window Prices

While dozens of factors can impact your window replacement cost, we’ve listed a few of the most important, including style, size, and labor costs, below to help you plan accordingly for your upcoming project.

1. Glass Type

Did you realize the quality of glass in your window system can impact the price of your windows? However, glass quality isn’t something to skimp on. It’s smart to choose a high-quality glass that can save you thousands of dollars in utility bills and keep your home at a comfortable, consistent temperature for every season.

Windows systems with more glass panes tend to be more expensive. For example, a triple-pane system typically costs more than a double-pane system. Additionally, windows with modern technology, like energy-efficient frames, noise-reducing spacers, and impact-resistant glass, cost more than standard windows—but these long-lasting windows with money-saving features are worth the investment!

2. Window Style

Are you debating between casement and double-hung windows for your upcoming replacement? If so, the cost may be the determining factor between which window styles you choose for your home.

Single-hung and double-hung windows are the most common (and, therefore, most affordable) window styles. Casement, awning, and sliding windows are comparable in price, followed by bay and bow windows, which are often the most expensive options. Generally speaking, larger and less common styles of windows tend to be the costliest.

Of course, standard windows will always be more affordable than custom windows, so if you’re looking to save money on your installation, it’s wise to choose pre-selected styles.

3. Window Size

It may seem obvious, but your window’s size will dramatically impact its cost. Large windows are a great option for inviting warm, natural sunlight into your home—but they’re not cheap.

For example, if you have a wall in your living room that you’d like to enhance with a picture window, you should expect to pay significantly more than if you added two smaller sliding windows in the same place. If you’re on a tight budget, choosing smaller windows with less glass is a great way to save money on your window installation.

4. Framing Material

Windows are made from various materials, including vinyl, wood, and fiberglass. However, all these materials are sold at different prices to accommodate a wide range of budgets.

For example, vinyl windows are more affordable because they are low-maintenance and easy to install. On the other hand, wood tends to be more expensive because it’s a high-quality natural material that is more difficult to install. Wood also requires careful (and costly) upkeep to prevent damage from pests, storms, and weathering.

5. Labor Costs

Choosing a skilled window installer is critical for long-lasting performance, regardless of how costly or inexpensive your windows are.

Expert labor will be more expensive upfront, but it will save you hundreds (or thousands!) of dollars on maintenance and repair costs in the long run. For example, an experienced contractor, like JD Hostetter & Associates, will ensure you avoid common issues from improper installation, like uncomfortable drafts, unsightly condensation, storm damage, and faulty operation.

6. Warranty Requirements

Windows with a warranty will be more expensive than windows without a warranty. However, you’re not just paying for a warranty—you’re paying for peace of mind.

First, you can have confidence in the quality of your windows. Manufacturers will only provide a warranty if they know their windows will last since they don’t want to pay you out for low-quality products they know will break. Second, you rest assured the quality of your installation is top-notch. We are a Pella Elite Platinum Certified Contractor, which means we’ve completed extensive training and certification to offer you a lifetime warranty on your windows.
