Are Malarkey Roofing Shingles Worth the Cost?

Home with Malarkey Roofing Shingles

When choosing a roofing brand for your replacement, we understand you want to receive the best combination of durability, beauty, and value.

That’s why we install roofing materials from Malarkey Roofing Products—a family-owned company that’s been manufacturing durable, eco-friendly roofing shingles for decades.

Discover the many benefits (and potential disadvantages) of Malarkey’s roofing shingles to determine if these roofing products are right for your Indianapolis home!

Who Is Malarkey?

Malarkey Roofing Products is an industry-leading roofing manufacturer in North America. This family-owned business was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 1953 and has been manufacturing eco-friendly roofing materials ever since.

Malarkey’s products are known for having a high price point. However, they hold a solid reputation among homeowners and professional roofers alike, and their products are lasting, durable, and attractive.

Types of Malarkey Roofing Shingles

Malarkey produces three types of top-quality roofing shingles—architectural, designer, and three-tab roofing shingles.

Architectural Roofing Shingles

Architectural roofing shingles, also called laminate roofing shingles, are the most popular style of roofing shingle from Malarkey. They come in four distinct styles that offer unique benefits, like solar reflectivity and impact performance.

Designer Roofing Shingles

Designer roofing shingles are larger, heavier, and stronger than architectural roofing shingles. They feature dual-layer construction for ultimate weather performance, and they create a heightened roof dimension for added curb appeal.

Three-Tab Roofing Shingles

Three-tab roofing shingles are traditional, economical, and reliable. They’re made with a single asphalt layer, so they don’t offer the same depth as architectural or designer styles, but they’re sturdy and offer long-lasting protection.

Endless Benefits of Malarkey Roofing Shingles

Don’t just take our word for it. Here are a few (excellent!) reasons why Indianapolis homeowners love their roofing shingles from Malarkey.

Versatile Accessories

Malarkey’s Secure Choice System offers a wide selection of water barriers, shingle underlayments, starter shingles, and hip and ridge shingles, allowing you control of your roof’s cost, performance, and functionality.

For instance, you can choose from four shingle underlayments. Secure Start® SG is an affordable underlayment, whereas Secure Start® Permeable is more costly and has higher performance. You can also select RidgeFlex® for low-profile hip and ridge shingles, or EZ-Ridge® for high-profile hip and ridge shingles. The choice is yours!

Durable Design

Malarkey’s roofing shingles are designed to withstand extreme weather conditions, like rain, wind, hail, and snowstorms. Most designs have a Class 3 or Class 4 impact rating, meaning they won’t crack when hit by hail, debris, and other flying objects, and they come with a limited wind warranty for up to 110 MPH.

Malarkey’s roofing shingles are made with NEX® Polymer Modified (Rubberized) Asphalt, which keeps them flexible, so they won’t crack, break, or tear as they age.

Eco-Friendly Composition

Malarkey Roofing Products is committed to producing eco-friendly products that positively impact the environment. The NEX Polymer Modified Asphalt Formula makes your shingles durable by using upcycled rubber and plastic polymers made from tires and plastic bags to extend the lifespan of your roofing materials and our landfills.

Malarkey offers 3M® Smog-Reducing Granules to eliminate air pollution by collecting smog and converting it into water-soluble ions. When you install a roof with these granules, you can have the same positive impact on the environment as planting two trees!

Additionally, homes in dry, hot climates may wish to install 3M® Cool Roofing Granules to reflect ultraviolet rays, reducing solar heat entering the house, therefore increasing energy efficiency.

Stain Resistant

Malarkey offers 3M® Copper Granules with Scotchgard® Protector to prevent algae growth on homes in warm, humid climates. They can keep your roof looking clean, attractive, and good as new for decades!

Training Program

Malarkey Roofing Products has a certification program allowing roofing contractors to become experts at properly installing their products. JD Hostetter is a Malarkey Roofing Emerald Premium Contractor—the highest level of certification awarded by the company!

Strong Reputation

Both homeowners and roofers love Malarkey’s roofing products for various reasons. Homeowners love the durability, beauty, and eco-friendly features of these popular shingles, and roofers will benefit from the wide nailing zone and modified asphalt, making these roofing shingles easy to install.

Potential Disadvantages of Malarkey Roofing Shingles

Malarkey’s roofing products don’t have many disadvantages, but before installing these durable, lasting roofing shingles, you shouldn’t overlook these factors.

High Cost

Malarkey’s roofing shingles are some of the most expensive on the market, with prices comparable with top-rated brands like GAF® and CertainTeed®. These shingles range from $73 – $170 per square for materials alone, depending on which shingle you choose.

However, the expensive cost is due to the high-quality materials and premium installation technique you can count on when installing a roof from Malarkey. After all, you’re making an investment that will last for decades!

Limited Selection

Malarkey Roofing Products only offers six roofing styles—Highlander® NEX, Vista®, Legacy® Scotchgard, Ecoasis® NEX, Windsor® Scotchgard, and Dura-Seal® AR.

While this may be seen as a disadvantage, limited styles make your roofing selection much more straightforward. You can be confident each variation has been thoroughly tested and proven to enhance your home’s longevity, performance, and curb appeal.

Warranty Limitations

When an Emerald Premium Contractor installs your Malarkey roof, you’ll receive a lifetime warranty covering 15 years of labor and material costs. However, this warranty can only be transferred during the Right Start® Period, which lasts five years after installation. Transfers after this timeframe will default to a two-year warranty.

Our Final Verdict: Malarkey Shingles Are Worth the Investment

Do the advantages of durable, long-lasting Malarkey roofing shingles outweigh the few drawbacks? We certainly think so!

Despite the cost, you can be confident you’re making a long-term investment in your roof’s performance and longevity from a company that’s been producing industry-leading roofing materials for nearly 70 years.
