Natural light is an attractive and sought-after feature in modern home design. It is appealing because it creates a warm, inviting living space, but it also offers more tangible advantages, like mood-boosting benefits and energy savings.

One of the best ways to add outdoor light to your home is with the right windows. In this post, we’ll explore some of the benefits of adding natural light sources to your home, as well as some ideal window styles to choose from for ample illumination.

What Is the Importance of Natural Light in the Home?

Sleep Quality

Natural light can have a positive impact on your sleep quality. Research shows that regular exposure to sunlight can help keep your body in tune with its circadian rhythm. In contrast, too much exposure to artificial light can lead to difficulty falling asleep or restless sleep.

Electricity Costs

With more natural light inside your home, you will rely less on artificial light. And here’s the best part — using sunlight is free! You will see significant cost savings on your energy bill during the spring and summer when the days are longer, and you can rely on natural light to keep your home illuminated instead of lamps and light fixtures.

Health Benefits

Sunlight is imperative for your physical and mental health. It has been proven to boost mood, strengthen bones, regulate the immune system, reduce stress, and improve productivity. So, if you can’t get outside, soak up the sunshine from inside your home to experience these numerous health benefits!

Ideal Window Styles for Maximum Natural Light

If you want to prioritize natural lighting in your home, choose from the following window styles designed to provide abundant illumination.

1. Picture Windows

Picture windows are generally large with uninterrupted panes of glass. Because of their large size and unobstructed views, they are ideal for welcoming natural light into your home. They are commonly installed in rooms with taller ceilings and more wall space, like a living room.

Picture windows are inoperable, meaning they cannot open or close. However, you can always install double-hung or sliding windows on either side of a picture window to enjoy sunlight and fresh breezes — an absolute win-win scenario!

2. Sliding Windows

Sliding windows are installed in all shapes and sizes and can be opened from left to right (or right to left) on a sliding mechanism, as the name suggests. They provide expansive views with just one slender check rail and are straightforward to operate.

When installing sliding windows, stay away from grilles or grids to ensure nothing will inhibit the natural light from flooding your home.

3. Bay and Bow Windows

Bay and bow windows are excellent options to add natural light to your home. These windows are comprised of three, four, or more windows joined together at an angle or curve, and they protrude outward, creating additional space indoors, like a reading corner or breakfast nook.

Bay and bow windows are popularly installed in living rooms, kitchens, or master bedrooms. They are unique since they capture light from multiple angles (not just one) and can add natural light to dark corners that would otherwise not receive illumination due to roofing shadows.

4. Casement Windows

Casement windows are hinged at the side and crank open to the left or right. Because they have just one sash, narrow frames, and no check rail, they can allow more natural light inside than many other window styles.

Casement windows come in large sizes, so if you want to maximize the natural light inside your home, choose a larger window with more glass. These windows are popularly used in bedrooms and living rooms and are an excellent alternative to double-hung windows.

5. Transom Windows

Transom windows are installed above a window or door and can be operable or fixed. However, their primary purpose is to allow more natural light into dark or hard-to-reach spaces.

For example, a transom window above a solid wood entry door can allow natural light into an otherwise dark, dim hallway. You can also install a transom window above a smaller window to ensure the space receives plenty of light.

6. Skylights

Skylights are a unique way to add natural light to the upper levels of your home. They can be installed almost anywhere on the roof, so if you are tight on wall space but would love to enjoy more natural light in your home — skylights might be the perfect option.
