1. Inspect Siding
Your home’s siding is its first line of defense against the elements. Before the extreme winter weather arrives, take a moment to examine your siding for any gaps or cracks. Replace or repair any loose or damaged siding panels to prevent mold buildup or water damage.
The months leading up to winter are also the perfect time to clean your siding, preventing the accumulation of dirt and grime, and to touch up any paint. An extra coat of paint can do wonders in protecting your siding from winter moisture and avoiding swelling, warping, and rot.
2. Clean Gutters
Before the first big storm rolls into town, clear your gutters of fallen leaves and other debris. Repair any cracks or leaks, and ensure that the downspouts are properly angled to direct water away from your foundation, preventing water buildup at the base of your home.
3. Seal Windows and Doors
To keep your home warm and toasty this winter (and your energy bills low!), check the seals around your windows and doors. If needed, replace worn weatherstripping and apply caulk to fill in gaps or cracks in the frames.

6. Drain Faucets
When temperatures drop below freezing, the water that remains in pipes connected to outdoor faucets from all the summer fun can freeze and expand, causing the pipes to burst.
Replacing pipes can be a hassle, so to ensure your pipes survive the winter, take a moment to turn off the water supply valve, detach all hoses, and store them in a safe location, such as a garage or shed. Then, open the faucets to allow all the water to drain out before closing them tightly. You can also install insulated faucet covers for extra protection.

Ventilation and insulation work together to keep your home at a consistent temperature and ensure that heat escapes your attic through vents, rather than remaining trapped below the roof.
Before winter arrives, check the condition of your attic insulation and install new insulation if needed. Additionally, ensure that the attic has proper ventilation (soffit and ridge vents) to allow the flow of cool air inside and warm, moist air outside.
10. Repair Driveways and Walkways
If you have any gaps or cracks in your driveways or walkways, it’s wise to have them filled in and sealed before cold weather rolls into town.
When rainwater or melted snow seeps into the fissures of damaged concrete, pavers, or asphalt and then freezes, it can cause these surfaces to expand and crack, resulting in costly damage and potential slipping or tripping hazards for your family or guests. Sealant creates a protective barrier against moisture, extending the lifespan of your driveways and walkways.
